Salkantay and Machupicchu 5 days 4 nights
Itinerary
DAY 1: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA
We will pick you up from your hotel and then we will leave Cusco very early in the morning, and go towards Mollepata. We will see the town of Limatambo (2100 meters above sea level), an important access point to the city of Cusco during Inca times during this four-hour bus trip. Upon arrival at Mollepata (2800 masl) we will take care of our camping equipment, backpacks and food for the horses. We will begin our ascent towards Cruzpata (3100 meters above sea level) where we will see various plants, native birds, and the Apurímac River Canyon (which is one of the deepest in Peru).
In Cruzpata we will have lunch, and then we will leave for Soraypampa (3900 meters above sea level). We will see small groups of houses, flora, small wild birds and spectacular views of the snow-capped Humantay (5902 meters above sea level) along the way. After approximately 4 hours of walking, we will arrive at our camp in Soraypampa. From here you can see the majestic Apu Salkantay (6271 meters above sea level).
DAY 2: SORAYPAMPA – CHAULLAY – QOLLPAPAMPA
After breakfast we will begin the trekking. After a while we will begin our ascent towards the Apacheta Pass (4,650 meters above sea level), which will take approximately two and a half hours. This slight climb crosses through the puna (high, dry area with little vegetation). From this point we can appreciate the spectacular views of the Salkantay mountain, an impressive snow-covered mountain (6264 meters above sea level). From the Apacheta pass we will walk down for three hours, and have lunch in Huayracpunku. Two hours later we will arrive at Chaullay (2920 meters above sea level) and then at our camp in Qollpapampa.
DAY 3: QOLLPAPAMPA – SANTA TERESA
Wake up to a beautiful mountain landscape after breakfast. We are going to start the walk, this day we will walk for around 9 hours, we will arrive at Uscamayuc, where we will begin to walk through a tropical sub-valley with different types of plants, fruits, flowers, birds, etc. here coca and banana crops can be observed, with luck we will be able to observe the famous national bird of Peru “Gallito de las Rocas”, then we will arrive at a community called “La Playa” (2400 meters above sea level) where we will have lunch, rest for a while and continue hiking to the town of Santa Teresa where we will find a thermal spring (optimal thermal water bath) and spend the night here.
DAY 4: SANTA TERESA – AGUAS CALIENTES
After breakfast we will start walking and go towards the town Colpani, we follow this growing trail, from which we will see plantations of coffee, banana, passion fruit and a beautiful view of the Santa Teresa Valley. We continue along the banks of the Vilcanota River, until we reach La Oroya (where we will cross the river by cables, since there is no bridge). And continue walking to the place called Hidroeléctrica, from this place we can see the back of the Machupicchu Sanctuary, where we have lunch. and then walk until we reach Aguas Calientes at 5:00 and then we are going to stay in a hostel, have dinner and spend the night there.
DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU
Early in the morning we will leave Aguas Calientes (1700 meters above sea level) and go to the archaeological site of Machupicchu (2450 meters above sea level) and we will have a guided tour of approximately 3 hours visiting the most important, amazing places, and then we will have time to take photographs, explore or climb the mountain where Waynapichu one can experience spectacular views of all of Machupicchu , the valleys and mountains that surround it, or you can visit the Temple of the Moon or the fabulous Inca Bridge. In the afternoon we will meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where, if you wish, you can visit and relax in its hot springs. In Aguas Calientes we will have lunch and then take the train to Cusco, where we arrive at night.
