Manu Cultural Zone 4 days 3 nights

Itinerary

DAY 1:
We leave Cusco early in the morning in our specially equipped vehicles. Approximately mid-morning we will visit the interesting pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca, commonly known as “Chullpas”. We continue to Paucartambo, a typical Spanish colonial town, and then towards the Acjanacu pass, which marks the beginning of the Cultural Zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Here, a thick cloud cover provides perpetual humidity and makes an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants such as bromeliads. This varied and fascinating world is home to the Cock-of-the-Rock, spectacled bear, orchids, tree ferns (one of the oldest plants), mosses and lichens.

This cloud forest exists between 2,000 and 3,500 meters above sea level and at least 50% of the plant species found here are endemic to this region. Overnight at our Orquídeas “San Pedro” hostel.

DAY 2:
Today we woke up very early to observe the national bird Cock of the Rock ( Rupicola peruviana), from Peru. The males are a vibrant reddish orange and 5:00 PM. As many as several dozen gather for an exhibition of a ritual mating dance on a comfortably ensconced viewing platform called “Lek.” The males show their crest, showing and postures for the females. The females, smaller in number, see to select the most suitable males. After breakfast we continue cycling along the narrow path between waterfalls and canyons towards the town of Pilcopata (*1) for approximately 2 hours (*2). A 30 minute bus ride to the port of Atalaya where we will board our covered outboard motor boat and head down the Alto Madre de Dios River for approximately 30 minutes towards our Private Reserve “Erika” where we will spend the next two nights . Short walk around the country house. *1 Optional: Mountain bike descent from our Tambo San Pedro (1700 masl) – Pilcopata Cloud Forest – Selva Alta (700 masl) * 2 Optional: Here in Pilcopata we will make the final adjustments for a 3 hour rainforest rafting trip through the Kosñipata River where we will have the opportunity to take a dip and of course enjoy the spectacular view of the Koñeq canyon. Continuing along the tropical river of Alto Madre de Dios to the Erika hostel.

DAY 3:
Erika is located in a transition zone between high and low jungle (600 masl to 1150 masl, between 1,200 and 3,450 feet) that covers different habitats. This altitude range explains the high diversity of wildlife found around this country house, so immediately after breakfast, we will start walking near the banks of the river, during the walk our guide will tell us about insects, plants medicinal, trees, reptiles, mammals, etc. In the afternoon we will begin a short boat ride to visit a small lake near the Alto Madre de Dios River, here we will have the opportunity to see the Hoatzin, a primitive bird, white alligators, many species of birds, insects, etc. . Short night walk. This will be our last night in the wonderful Amazon jungle. Overnight at the hostel. * Optional: New!!! Canopy tour: Our guests traverse from tree to tree and platform to platform using pulleys on horizontal cables, while navigating through the treetops of the tropical rainforest canopy, and on trails far below. Specialized staff will help you on this exciting journey through the different layers of the virgin rainforests and explain what is happening around you, from the moment one leaves the ground, until one rappels down to the forest floor.
